Spelling Mastery
Spelling Mastery is an evidence-based explicit instruction spelling program that teaches students the concepts they need for reading and writing through interwoven strategies that teach phonemic, morphographic and whole-word approaches to spelling. Spelling Mastery uses specific strategies in its delivery to teach and encourage students to think their way through spelling rather than memorising spelling patterns or words.
At Giant Steps, Spelling Mastery is delivered through a streamed program, with students from Orange and Blue Rooms working in ability groupings across both classes based on their results from embedded placement testing. Students work in small groups of two to four students with either a teacher or teacher’s aide. Spelling Mastery occurs at 9:15am Monday to Thursday in Orange and Blue Rooms, and runs for 20 to 30 minutes depending on student need.
