To be eligible to attend Giant Steps Tasmania, a student must have a clinical diagnosis of Autism.
Giant Steps Tasmania accepts students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as diagnosed by a suitably qualified Medical Practitioner. Giant Steps Tasmania gives priority to students who require extensive or substantial levels of adjustment as defined by the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD is an annual collection of information about Australian school students who are receiving adjustments due to disability.
Eligibility can be a complex issue and some consultation may be required.
Giant Steps Tasmania accepts students with an ASD regardless of sex, race, socio-economic status, and place of residence. Students must be 5 as of the 1st of January of the year of enrolment. This is the first full-time year of schooling in Tasmania. Giant Steps Tasmania can accept a maximum of 12 students on any given school day in each of the following classes: Green Room (Grades P-3); Red Room (Grades 3-7); Orange Room (Grades 7-9); Blue Room (Grades 10-12). Giant Steps Tasmania will not accept any student for placement whose needs cannot be adequately met by the school’s resources.
