At Giant Steps Tasmania, our concept-based curriculum connects learning across subject areas and year levels, enabling students to engage with age-appropriate curriculum content through meaningful, inclusive, and purposeful learning experiences.
At Giant Steps Tasmania, we deliver the Australian Curriculum through a concept-based approach to teaching and learning. The development of our curriculum has involved identifying connections between curriculum content across year levels within our multi-age classes and across learning areas of the Australian Curriculum. These connected content areas are then organised into specific topics, with a central concept providing the lens through which learning is explored.
Teaching through concepts gives curriculum content a clear purpose and direction, promoting rich and meaningful learning experiences that support students to develop deeper understandings. Our integrated concept-based curriculum is currently mapped to content from the Science, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), and Health and Physical Education (HPE) learning areas of the Australian Curriculum.
We are committed to ensuring that all students can access age-appropriate curriculum content in developmentally appropriate ways. Our teachers are highly skilled at differentiating learning to meet individual needs while maintaining high expectations for all students. Through inclusive learning goals, effective teaching strategies, and considered verbal and non-verbal communication supports, teachers create meaningful opportunities for every student to participate, learn, and experience success.
